Parsons PTC to Launch on Metrolink

March 5, 2015

Parsons announced that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has given the Southern California Regional Railroad Authority — the governing board of Metrolink — the green light to implement Positive Train Control (PTC) technology in revenue service demonstration on the San Bernardino rail line. This is the final stage of PTC testing before the FRA will grant similar PTC operations on Metrolink’s other commuter rail lines in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and Ventura counties.

“We are pleased to have reached this important project milestone,” said Todd Wager, Parsons Group president. “Metrolink is the first commuter rail to achieve this key FRA approval, which is a significant step not only for Metrolink but also for the railroad industry as a whole. It will help usher in a safer train system throughout the country.”

PTC is collision avoidance technology that monitors and controls train movements. It is intended to prevent train-to-train collisions, overspeed derailments, incursions into established work zone limits, and movement of trains through a main line switch left in an improper position.
