Mark Walbrun has joined Hatch Mott MacDonald as its east unit practice leader for rail and transit.
Walbrun will be responsible for HMM’s Rail & Transit operations in the eastern United States, where the company is providing a wide variety of services for rail transit, high-speed rail, freight rail, and intermodal station projects. He will be based in HMM’s Chicago office.
Since 1975, Walbrun has led major North American projects in railroad and transit system planning, design, and construction. He has directed all forms of passenger rail infrastructure programs, including intercity passenger service, high-speed rail, multimodal terminals, light rail, rapid transit, commuter rail, and people movers.

During more than two decades with Amtrak, Walbrun was responsible for the massive reconstruction of Chicago Union Station and its approach tracks, the master plan for New York’s Penn Station redevelopment, and high-speed rail studies in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, and Virginia. He was honored with the Amtrak Presidents Achievement Award.
Walbrun is a past president of the predecessor to the American Railway Engineering and MOW Association, chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Shared Use Corridors Committee, and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Air-Rail Organisation. He has been a major contributor to the AREMA Manual for Railroad Engineering, has taught seminars on railroad engineering at the City Colleges of Chicago, University of Illinois, and University of Wisconsin, and has led six worldwide technology transfer tours.
