The Urban Transit Association of Quebec (ATUQ) unveiled the results of a major study on the economic impacts of its member companies that serve the largest cities in the province, Montreal, Quebec, Levis, Laval, Longueuil, Gatineau, Trois-Rivières, Saguenay and Sherbrooke. This study clearly demonstrates that public transit is a stimulant for the Quebec economy and an engine business that creates tens of thousands of quality jobs and contributes billions of dollars into the economy of Quebec.
Highlights of the STM
The study reveals that in 2013, among others, the Société de transport de Montreal (STM) has supported 11,649 direct jobs and 288 indirect 2, for a total of 13,937 jobs.
The STM activities generated wealth because:
- STM has invested over $ 1.7 billion in the Quebec economy.
- All monetary injections into the economy of Quebec have generated a value added of $ 1.4 billion (contribution to gross domestic product of Quebec). The STM activities also helped generate tax revenue 250.7 million to the Government of Quebec and 88.9 million for the federal government.
Overview for all transport companies
More broadly, in 2013, the activities of all corporations transit Quebec positive economic impact because:
- They supported 16,831 direct jobs and 140 indirect 4 (person-years).
- Together, the nine companies have invested more than $ 2.5 billion in the Quebec economy.
- They have generated tax revenues $ 366.1 million for the Government of Quebec and 129.5 million for the federal government.
