Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Mike King will be on-hand Oct. 30 to help Topeka Metro celebrate the opening of its Phase II bus shelters. The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. at the Topeka Metro stop located in front of Topeka Housing Authority, 2010 SE California.
The additional 13 shelters were completed just one month after the opening of Phase I. In total, Topeka Metro has added 31 new shelters to its routes with plans to add another six before the end of the year.
“Our team has worked diligently to complete the shelter project,” said Susan Duffy, General Manager, Topeka Metro. “Our goal has been to have all of the shelters in place before the winter weather comes. We want to be able to provide a little more comfort to our riders.”
Funding for the new shelters was provided through a New Freedom grant distributed by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Topeka Metro applied for and received the grant as part of an effort to make fixed route bus stops more accessible to riders.
“Topeka Metro continues to improve the transit experience for the people of Topeka,” said Secretary King, “and these new shelters are the proof. Susan Duffy and the Metro staff are great partners and KDOT is looking forward to our continued collaboration.”
