SEPTA announced the addition of law enforcement veteran Mark J. Dorsey, who will serve as an inspector for the transit police department.
Dorsey, 58, brings 37 years of experience to his new job. Most recently, he was the chief of police at the University of Pennsylvania, following a 27-year career with the Philadelphia Police Department, where he achieved a variety of different ranks and served in a number of roles.
“We’re thrilled to have Inspector Dorsey join the SEPTA Transit Police Department,” said SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas Nestel III. “He brings with him a diverse background and a stellar reputation. His expertise and knowledge will be great assets in our efforts to bolster the transit system’s safety and security.”
Dorsey retired from the Philadelphia Police Department as an inspector in the Narcotics Bureau. Prior to this, he commanded and served in the Narcotics Bureau and Districts 15, 2 19, 6, 9 and 35. He also held positions in the Command Inspection Bureau, the Detective Bureau’s Headquarters Special Investigations’ Unit, Background Investigations Unit and Special Patrol’s ACT Unit. During his service for the Philadelphia Police Department, Dorsey received the Valor Award and more than 40 Merit Commendations for Outstanding Service.
He also previously served as director of public safety for Lakewood, N.J., and director of safety and security at La Salle University.
Dorsey graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree from La Salle, and is currently in the final phase of obtaining his master’s degree in organizational dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.
