Sound Transit to Purchase Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride from Pierce Transit

Aug. 29, 2014
Agency will continue to serve Pierce commuters as south line Sounder ridership grows.

The Sound Transit Board of Directors on Aug. 28 approved the purchase of the Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride facility from Pierce Transit for $2.8 million. The facility serves ST Express Route 596, which connects Bonney Lake area commuters to the Sounder commuter rail station in nearby Sumner.

The facility, located at 184th Avenue East and State Route 410 in Bonney Lake, includes 356 parking spaces for transit users. Pierce Transit has not operated bus service from the facility since 2012, when revisions to its service area were made. By purchasing and preserving the facility, Sound Transit will maintain much-needed commuter parking capacity in Pierce County as demand on the popular Sounder south line continues to grow. Average weekday ridership for Sounder in the second quarter increased 8 percent over the same period last year, and 7 percent on the south line.

Sound Transit will receive a $123,000 credit from Pierce Transit for repair work at the facility. The work will include repair of asphalt, curbs and concrete panels in the bus loop, repainting shelters, and installing drainage improvements.
