A project to develop measures to protect New York City communities from future storms, undertaken by HR&A Advisors and Parsons Brinckerhoff, has received a Globe Award in the public transit category from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).

Held annually, the Globe Awards recognize private-sector firms and public-sector transportation agencies that perform outstanding work in protecting and/or enhancing the natural environment in the planning, design, and construction of US transportation infrastructure projects.

HR&A Advisors and Parsons Brinckerhoff provided community planning and design services to seven community planning areas in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn on behalf of the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program as part of the New York State Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery. The state office offers rebuilding and revitalization assistance to communities severely damaged by Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee, and Superstorm Sandy.

The team provided preliminary planning and design for 81 potential projects totaling $108 million in funding. Eight of these projects would integrate transportation strategies as part of the overall protection measure. All the projects would provide environmental and economic benefits to the communities served, specifically focusing on protection and/or enhancement of the natural environment in public transportation to rebuild existing services and increase resiliency in future storms. Each project would utilize innovative and cost-effective storm mitigation techniques.
