Bombardier Transportation will help Munich Airport authorities to realize their strategic expansion plans with a new Innovia APM 300 automated people mover system. The contract, signed with Terminal 2 Betriebsgesellschaft mbH & Co oHG, represented by FM Bau (Flughafen München Baugesellschaft mbH), is for the design, build, supply, operation and maintainance of a driverless APM system. Together with the base order, the customer has executed options for extensions to the operation and maintenance periods taking the total services period to nine years. The total value of the contract is approximately 89 million euro ($120 million US).
Flughafen München GmbH and Deutsche Lufthansa AG, who jointly operate Terminal 2 at Munich Airport, are expanding its capacity with a new satellite facility to meet increased demand. Via the underground Innovia APM 300 automated people mover system, passengers will travel the 400 m from Terminal 2 to the new facility for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners in less than one minute. When the expansion work is completed, the annual passenger capacity of Munich Airport will increase by 11 million.
With 390,000 flights and 34.7 million passengers, Munich Airport was ranked the seventh most important airport in Europe in 2010. "The satellite facility will help us to meet projected passenger increases while continuing to build and improve on the high standards of quality and service achieved to date. Efficient and comfortable passenger transportation between Terminal 2 and the satellite plays a crucial role in this process," said Dr. Michael Kerkloh, chairman of the Board of Management, Flughafen München GmbH.

Bombardier will design and supply all of the system-wide Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) elements for the 0.7 km dual-lane turnkey system. This includes 12 Innovia APM 300 driverless vehicles, proven Bombardier CityFlo 650 automatic train control technology for driverless operation, station platform doors, onboard and wayside CCTV systems, communications and power distribution systems, as well as the provision of project management, systems engineering and integration, testing and commissioning. Bombardier's scope also includes the civil construction works. Completion of the system and start of operation is scheduled for 2014 – in time for test running of the satellite facility, after which the nine year period of operations and maintenance will begin.
The Innovia APM 300 platform is Bombardier's newest generation of APM technology. It has all of the flexibility needed to meet the specific system requirements of airports and rapid transit authorities as it enables numerous configurations due to many customizable features and flexible operational modes. Bombardier first launched its INNOVIA APM 300 technology in the Middle East and Munich Airport is the second customer to select this new generation of APM system.
Bombardier is also currently installing a new Innovia APM 200 system at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which will open in 2012.
