Amtrak Showcases Mechanical Services at APTA Industry Expo

Rolling stock maintenance, locomotive rebuilds and HVAC overhauls among full-range of services available

Amtrak Mechanical Services maintains more than 2,000 pieces of passenger rail equipment using efficient, industry leading processes and will showcase these services at the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) Expo and annual meeting Oct. 3-5, 2011 in New Orleans.

Amtrak offers a full-range of mechanical services for passenger and freight railroad equipment including overhauls and wreck repairs, wheel maintenance, air brake service, seat repair and replacement, electronic testing and maintenance, day-to-day equipment servicing, rolling stock engineering, and positive train control implementation and advising.

Amtrak operates three major back shops and 12 terminals and maintenance yards with more than 4,800 mechanical personnel. Specialties include air brake valve refurbishment, HVAC overhaul and electric and diesel locomotive rebuilds. Other services offered include car overhaul, interior upgrades, root cause analysis, continuous maintenance, management training, equipment painting and trim work, restroom care, and technical and advisory services.

A full range of technologies is available to support maintenance services including on-board equipment health monitoring, infrared and acoustic detection equipment, ARGUS wheel measurement system, ultrasonic wheel defect detection and vibration analysis.

Amtrak Mechanical Services currently provides rolling stock maintenance services for numerous state and commuter partners, privately-owned rail cars that are registered with Amtrak as well as its own intercity fleet.
