MTA OKs Fare Hikes, Service Cuts

Connecticut Post Online (Bridgeport, Connecticut)

NEW YORK - Pablo Coello of Stamford was disappointed to hear that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will consolidate late-night train service and raise subway and bus fares to ease its budget woes.

Coello, 32, said he can adjust to the service cuts, but the added cost of subway and bus rides will hurt thousands of Connecticut residents who commute to New York.

"There are a lot of relatively wealthy people who stopped driving their cars to take the train, and now they'll be spending that extra money on trains," Coello said.

The MTA board voted 12-1 Wednesday to approve a budget that will consolidate late-night Metro-North trains to Stamford and other Fairfield County towns and end New Canaan ticket window service. The budget raises subway and bus fares and slashes service in New York City to close a $1.2 billion gap this year, officials said.

The MTA still is trying to work out an agreement with the New York State Assembly for more funding, officials said.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation, which owns the New Haven Line, must approve the changes, which would take effect in July.
