NJ Transit is installing surveillance cameras inside trains, joining other regional transit agencies that have equipped trains and buses to monitor security and behavior, but some question whether the privacy of passengers will be violated.

NJ Transit is installing surveillance cameras inside trains, joining other regional transit agencies that have equipped trains and buses to monitor security and behavior, but some question whether the privacy of passengers will be violated.

Riders spotted the first cameras on May 3, and NJ Transit sent an alert on May 4 to  Port Jervis and Pascack Valley line riders, telling them surveillance cameras are being installed in trains that NJ Transit runs under contract for Metro-North.

Cameras will be installed in trains on other NJ Transit lines as funding is available, said Nancy Snyder, an agency spokeswoman. There's no set schedule for those installations, she said.
