Backers of a proposed bullet train to Dallas are having a rough ride through rural Texas but are expecting a warmer welcome in the Houston area.

Two public hearings — one in the Houston metro and the other in Madisonville — are being held on the same night but are expected to highlight the divide over whether the state needs the project planned by Texas Central Partners.

The Monday night hearings are being held so Federal Railroad Administration officials can finalize the environmental report on the project, expected to cost between $15 billion and $18 billion to build. They’re part of a series of meetings that are being held along the proposed route.
