The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, along with its affiliate and subsidiary agencies, discontinued it membership with the American Public transportation Association.

In a seven-page letter to APTA President and CEO Michael Melaniphy on April 8, 2016, the MTA outlines the basis for the decision to terminate the membership in a unanimous opinion of the MTA executive leadership team.

The letter outlines the MTA's concerns of why APTA is not worth their investment.

Mass Transit asked APTA to respond to the MTA’s actions. APTA Director - Advocacy Communications Mantill Williams provided the following statement:

"We are obviously disappointed and we are continuing the conversation with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority about their membership.  We believe that continued partnership and collaboration among the MTA, APTA, and the overall public transportation industry is important as APTA serves the public interest and represents all modes of public transportation."
