TN: MATA Security Guard Indicted for Death of a Passenger

Aug. 20--A Memphis Area Transit Authority security guard was indicted in the May 6 death of a bus passenger, according to the Shelby County District Attorney's office Wednesday morning.

On May 6, James Gray, 68, was pushed from a bus and fell face first onto the concrete. Gray was transported to the hospital in critical condition and died Aug. 3.

Adicus Mitchell, 50, was originally charged with aggravated assault, but the charge was upgraded to aggravated assault resulting in death when Gray died, according to the district attorney's office.

Mitchell was reportedly responding to a passenger complaint. According to the Shelby County District Attorney's office, Mitchell pushed Gray off the bus because he wasn't moving fast enough.

Mitchell could serve between three and 15 years in prison if convicted. He is out on $40,000 bond.
