TX: TAPS Access Starts Call Center Service for Medicaid Transportation Services

Aug. 03--In preparation for its upcoming expansion into Medicaid transportation services, the Texoma Area Paratransit System launched its TAPS Access call center in Sherman on Friday. TAPS Access will now be accepting calls to set up non-emergency medical transportation for eligible Medicaid recipients for when it starts the new service in September.

"Over the past few weeks, we have been on a fast track to build an entirely new operating unity that will interface with our larger organization," TAPS CEO Brad Underwood said. These changes include the hiring of 100 new staff, including call center personnel, support staff and drivers, Underwood said. TAPS Public Transit will provide back office functions and support for the new Access brand.

In May, TAPS was awarded the 36-month contract with the Health and Human Services Commission to provide non-emergency transportation for Medicaid recipients within a 16-county North Texas region. This region included an estimated 55,000 Medicaid recipients, Underwood said.

In addition to Medicaid recipients, TAPS will provide service to Children with Special Health Care Needs and Transportation for Indigent Cancer Patients Program members.

According to the new TAPS Access website, the call center will be accepting calls for service between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"This is not only a win for TAPS, but for the entire region," said Underwood, in May. Underwood said he expects there to be a multi-million dollar economic impact on the region from the increased service through newly generated payroll, vendor contracts and goods and services.

With the new contract, TAPS is the largest small urban/rural transit agency in the state, and in the top five for the nation, said Underwood.

The agency will start transportation services under the TAPS Access banner on September 1. For more information on eligibility and service details, please visit www.tapsaccess.com.
