OR: Sex Offender on TriMet Accused of Exposing Himself to 5-Year-Old Girl Fled from Bus

July 14--A 52-year-old sex offender who is accused of exposing himself to a 5-year-old girl and her mother on a TriMet bus appeared in court Monday to hear the charges against him.

Karl Fredrick Deickmiller was arrested Friday on accusations that he exposed his penis while sitting across the aisle from the girl and her mother about 11:30 a.m. July 7 as the No. 17 bus traveled through downtown Portland.

"(The girl's mother) noticed her daughter was covering her eyes," reads a probable cause affidavit written by prosecutor John Copic. The girl's mother saw what the man was doing, so she yelled at him and he quickly left the bus, according to the affidavit.

The next day, police watched video surveillance from the bus, then sent a still-frame from the video to law enforcement agencies throughout Multnomah County. Probation officer Leticia Longoria-Navarro and Portland police officer Bridget Sickon both identified the man as Deickmiller. Longoria-Navarro said she'd supervised Deickmiller, and Sickon said she's known Deickmiller to be a predatory sex offender for years.

According to the affidavit, Deickmiller said he has exposed himself to five or six girls in the past six months. He told Sickon that "he has an inner drive to masturbate in front of young girls and it is so fierce he must fulfill it," the affidavit states. "He said he was 'out of control' and will continue to re-offend."

According to the affidavit, Deickmiller said that when he saw the 5-year-old on the bus he moved closer to give her a better view of himself. "Deickmiller said the mom was not his type," the affidavit reads.

Deickmiller was charged, based on the district attorney's information, with felony public indecency, indecent exposure, second-degree disorderly conduct and interfering with public transportation. He pleaded not guilty. If convicted, sentencing guidelines recommend a prison sentence of two to 2 1/2 years in prison.

The prosecution asked Multnomah County Circuit Judge Cheryl Albrecht to raise Deickmiller's bail from $14,000 to $100,000. Albrecht did.

Deickmiller has a history of exposing his genitals in public: He was convicted of public indecency in 2001 and then again in 2005. He also was convicted of first-degree sodomy and first-degree sexual abuse in 1994. Deickmiller lives in downtown Portland.

Authorities believe there might be more victims and are asking anyone with information to call transit police at 503-962-7566.
