The driver of the Metro Transit bus who lost control and veered off into a Nicollet Mall sidewalk Friday in downtown Minneapolis has been identified as John Lamaitre Senior Jr., 58, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.
Senior, of Edina, suddenly collapsed at 10 a.m. while driving the bus and died of apparent natural causes, the medical examiner said.
Witnesses said the No. 10 bus hit garbage cans, street lights and the metal awning of the WCCO-TV building before finally stopping at 11th Street South.
A bicyclist suffered minor injuries, as did a bus passenger, who twisted an ankle while attempting to assist the driver. About a half-dozen passengers were on board.
Senior died Friday afternooon at Hennepin County Medical Center. A Metro Transit news release said he began his career in 2013.
