An Amtrak train collided with a vehicle along state Routes 40 and 460 in Waverly around 6 a.m. today after the driver attempted to go around the crossing bar, State Police said.
Untron Drew in a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria attempted to drive around the crossing bar at the railroad crossing, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia Highway Patrol. The bar was lowered and warning lights were flashing, Anaya said.
The train was traveling at 79 mph when it struck Drew. He was air lifted to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The train with eight passenger cars was transporting 44 passengers and 5 crew members, none of whom were injured.
Anaya said alcohol was a factor in the accident.
