With the help of a federal grant, JAUNT has expanded its services to Nelson County residents and now offers midday bus transportation to Charlottesville on Tuesdays.
JAUNT, a regional public transportation system that provides service to citizens of the City of Charlottesville and Nelson, Amherst, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Louisa and Buckingham counties, previously offered the midday service only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and the bus did not return to Nelson County until about 3 p.m.
"We are very excited to offer this additional day of service and to be able to return at 2 p.m.," Donna Shaunesey, JAUNT's executive director, said in a news release.
"Nelson County residents can now travel to Charlottesville five days a week. We are grateful to have received the New Freedom grant that made this goal a reality."
This additional service for Nelson County is just one item the federal grant is being used to fund, as it had the broader goal of enhancing transportation services in general, said Karen Davis, JAUNT's director of public relations and marketing.
The midday service is not a fixed route, but rather, "it's door-to-door, by reservation," Davis said.
"We'll go and pick you up and take you where you need to go in Charlottesville."
Because it is not a fixed route, pickup and drop-off times are somewhat tentative, but generally the bus arrives in Charlottesville about 10 a.m. and returns to Nelson County about 2 p.m. on Tuesdays.
Davis said she feels the earlier return time will be a good thing for residents who don't have a lot to do in Charlottesville and don't want to spend as much time in the city.
The standard fare is $3.25 each way and exact change is required. For passengers with disabilities or for those 60 years and older, the fare is $2.25 each way.
JAUNT also currently offers fixed commuter routes to Charlottesville from Lovingston and Roseland, routes from Lovingston and Amherst to Wintergreen Resort, a route from Wintergreen Resort to Charlottesville, and door-to-door transportation to the Nelson Center and Lovingston area for shopping and other errands and throughout the Rockfish Valley area.
