A Caltrain Baby Bullet express train hit and killed a middle-aged man on the tracks at the California Avenue Caltrain station in Palo Alto.
Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said that the person was hit at 10:56 a.m. by northbound train #801.
She said that because it was an express train, it was not scheduled to stop at that station. Approximately 320 passengers were on board the train, Bartholomew said
At 11:50 a.m., trains began running on single tracks at reduced speeds through the area.
The San Mateo County Transit Police is handling the investigation, Bartholomew said.
The cause of the fatality has yet to be determined. Following a complete investigation, the Santa Clara County coroner will make the official determination of the cause of death, Bartholomew said.
At noon, Caltrain service was experiencing delays of up to 60 minutes and passangers were transferred to a northbound train #429.
Including this morning's death, there have been 13 fatalities on Caltrain tracks way this year.
