July 20--A commute-time Caltrain struck and killed a man on the tracks in Sunnyvale on Tuesday evening, the commuter line said -- the fifth death on the railroad corridor in the last seven weeks.
The southbound train hit the man at the Lawrence station in Sunnyvale at 6:45 p.m., Caltrain officials said. The train was not scheduled to stop there.
The man's name and age were not immediately available. Investigators were working to determine whether the death was a suicide or accident.
All trains were delayed significantly as crews worked to reopen the tracks.
It was the fifth fatality since June 1 and the second in as many weeks.
The last Caltrain death in Sunnyvale occurred in February.
The incident marked the 11th death on the tracks this year, equaling the tally from all of last year. There were 19 fatalities on the tracks in 2009.
