Since Aecom Senior Project Manager Arnab Gupta, P.E., came to Phoenix, he has been a big part of that city’s change in how it moves. When he first looked at the downtown area of the city and the challenges with putting in a light rail line, he worked to get the line built and start a transformation for downtown.

Gupta works in transit signal priority systems and worked on the 20 miles of starter light rail in Phoenix, which included 140 signalized intersections along the route. He also worked on transit signal priority systems for bus rapid transit in Tempe, Arizona; Chandler, Arizona; and Mesa, Arizona. He also has worked on projects in Nevada, California and New York.

Working on the Phoenix light rail system drew Gupta deeper into the transit profession because of the challenge it provided in improving the downtown area and the role he could have in improving lives of those who live in the area.

Gupta formerly was with Parsons Brinckerhoff, where he was recognized as a professional associate for his work with intelligent transportation systems; he served on the Transportation Research Board Signal System Technical Review Committee; and has presented on projects at conferences across the country.

Gupta said he enjoys transit because people are focused and passionate in the industry and the work they do improves the lives of the residents and cities. He’s excited for the North American high-speed rail initiative and how it will improve public movement while transit systems integrate into it.

“I work with a lot of very smart people who are very passionate about what they’re doing trying to provide a viable alternative transportation that improves and makes an impact of the lives of people.”
