Via Expanding Wireless Service

Aug. 14, 2015

Via Metropolitan Transit is expanding the availability of free wireless internet service to encompass the agency’s fleet and facilities beginning Sept. 1.

“This is a significant step forward in connectivity for our riders,” said Via President/CEO Jeffrey Arndt. “With this expansion and simultaneous upgrade to Via’s internet service, all of our riders will be able to take advantage of their commutes to finish work assignments, stay in touch with family and friends, or simply pass the time while they ride the bus. About half of our riders use electronic devices such as smart phones and tablets, and that number is climbing daily. This enhanced service allows them to stay connected throughout the day.”

Currently, Via offers 3G wireless service on its express routes, the Primo route, and 11 transit centers. Beginning Sept. 1, this service will improve to 4G LTE and will be available on all Via buses and properties. This service, which is being provided by Verizon and Cradlepoint, will also be installed on the paratransit fleet by Nov. 1.

“San Antonio remains committed to being a world-class city and certainly, transportation and technology are two important components of great cities,” said Henry Cisneros, chairman of the board of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. “Via’s addition of free WIFI services throughout their fleet and all facilities complements recent technological advances in the San Antonio area, allowing VIA customers to enjoy additional conveniences and amenities as they travel throughout our region using public transportation.”
