Smith will assume his new role in mid-September.

Bryan Smith, a transit professional with nearly three decades of experience, has been named as the next general manager and CEO of Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation (CityBus) in Indiana.

CityBus’ Board of Directors unanimously approved Smith’s contract at an Aug. 17 special meeting. Smith will begin as general manager and CEO on Sept. 19, 2022, and will work with Randy Anderson who has served as interim general manager since October 2021. Anderson will resume his position as IT systems administrator.

“We are thrilled to have Bryan join the CityBus family. He brings a wealth of experience in public transit to the Greater Lafayette area,” said CityBus Board Chair Ben Murray. “The board of directors looks forward to his arrival as we come out of the pandemic and return to providing mobility throughout our growing community.”

Smith currently serves as the deputy CEO of operations at Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (TheRide) in Michigan. His career began as a driver at the campus bus service while attending Kent State University. He spent 16 years at Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority before joining Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District in Illinois as chief operating officer.

Smith has a J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. He was part of Leadership APTA Class of 2014 and a Mass Transit 40 Under 40 honoree in 2015.

“It is my honor to be selected to serve as the CityBus CEO. CityBus provides a tremendous service for the community. CityBus enjoys a national reputation for innovation with CNG buses and renewable power,” Smith said. “I am eager to begin engaging with CityBus employees and community stakeholders on how we can serve the community with mobility solutions.”
