To ensure the continued success of the Metropolitan Transit System’s (MTS) light rail vehicle maintenance and repair program, MTS promoted Andy Goddard to superintendent of light rail vehicle (LRV) maintenance. Goddard assumes his new position immediately.
“This is a very exciting time for MTS as we transition to low-floor Trolley service and retire the U2-model trains our riders have known for so many years,” said Paul Jablonski, chief executive officer of MTS. “Andy has worked hard to get to this point. He has the analytical skill set and leadership qualities to take LRV Maintenance to the next level.”
With more than 17 years of experience working in the LRV Maintenance department at MTS, Goddard is now responsible for developing and implementing the department’s strategic plan to maintain a fleet of 129 trains that provide 39 million passenger trips per year. He will also oversee a $12 million budget and a staff of 72 electromechanics, linemen and assistant linemen.
Prior to his new role, Goddard was the assistant superintendent of LRV Maintenance for six years, where he developed and supervised the implementation and administrative plans for all LRV Maintenance activities. He began his career at MTS in 1997 as an assistant lineman. Goddard quickly moved up the ranks to electromechanic, maintenance supervisor, training supervisor, and most recently as the assistant superintendent. In various capacities, he’s planned, coordinated, scheduled and directed the maintenance of MTS Trolley’s fleet of LRVs, including the integration of 65 low-floor trains produced by Siemens Industry Inc.
“My number one goal is to provide our riders with safe, reliable and well-maintained trains,” said Goddard. “We hold ourselves to a very high standard here. I am very excited for this new opportunity to lead the LRV Maintenance team into the future as the Superintendent and I look forward to helping MTS grow as an organization.”
Goddard is a San Diego native and a second generation MTS employee. His father, Andy Goddard, Sr., worked at MTS for more than 25 years in LRV operations and safety management. Goddard will take over for Lee Summerlott, who accepted a position at the San Francisco Municipal Railway. Summerlott had been with MTS for more than 19 years.
