Cody Ponder, CART assistant transportation director, died Nov. 26 at age 35 after a long battle with cancer. Services are pending.

Since joining CART seven years ago, Ponder has been an active and popular participant at all OTA events. He volunteered in every possible category from planning agendas and judging the Transit Driving Championships to taking pledges on OTA night at OETA 'Festival'.

In 2011 along with Melissa Fesler of First Capital Trolley, he was named to the Mass Transit magazine '40 Under 40'  national list of emerging transit leaders. Ponder would have been 36 on December 21.

OTA President Jeannie McMillin, Little Dixie Transit, issued this statement:

"Cody was a beloved member of the OTA family. His hard work and dedication was a testimony to his outstanding character.

"He enjoyed himself during those times around OTA members but not nearly as much as we all enjoyed his presence. To be around him, one never knew he was in a fight for his life. His engaging personality belied the cancer he was battling. There is no doubt the hearts and prayers of all OTA members are with his family."

Doug Myers, OU Parking & Transportation Services director, made the announcement about Ponder via e-mail early this afternoon:

"It is with an enormous amount of sadness and regret that I announce the passing of Cody Ponder.

"Cody began his career at OU in 2006 and was promoted earlier this year from planner and grants specialist to assistant transportation director. To say Cody will be missed is a huge understatement. Please keep Johnnie-Margaret and the rest of Cody's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they plan the celebration of his life."
